March 21, 1933

THE NEW YORK TIMES, March 21, 1933

* Beginning of Dachau concentration camp
* Adolph Hitler becoming dictator
* Prohibition ending

This 36 page newspaper has a three column headline on the front page: "REICHSTAG MEETING TODAY IS PREPARED TO GIVE HITLER FULL CONTROL AS DICTATOR" with subheads.This was when Hitler officially became the dictator of Germany. 1933 was a very tumultuous time in Germany with the recent appointment of Adolph Hitler as Chancellor. Things would only get worse before the outbreak of World War II in 1939.
Perhaps the most significant report is another front page heading (see photos) on the creation of the Dachau concentration camp just outside Munich (not mentioned by name). It was the very first of many to be created & would be the model for all others. Much text on these two events. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.

Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 36 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Very nice condition.
