Item # 704998
September 13, 1958
THE DETROIT FREE PRESS, Sept. 13, 1958
* Little Rock, Arkansas - "The Lost Year"
* Supreme Court decision - Cooper v. Aaron
* Governor Orval Faubus defies - closes all Little Rock Schools for a year
* Central High School
The top of the front page has a banner headline: "FAUBUS DEFIES COURT, CLOSES HIGH SCHOOLS" with subheads, which tells of the beginning of what is now referred to as, "The Lost Year". Nice for display, and quite historic.
Note: In response to the Little Rock Nine inspired decision in 1957, Brown v. Board of Education, members of the school board filed suit to suspend the mandated desegregation plan (Cooper v. Aaron). On September 12, 1958, the Supreme Court rebuffed their request. In defiance of the SCOTUS' decision, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus closed all Little Rock Schools for an entire year.
Complete with 22 pages, small library stamp with masthead, some small binding and a little wear along the spine, generally nice.
