Wiki states: "C.F. Marryat is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction. In 1839, Marryat also published his Diary in America, a travelogue that reflects his criticisms of American culture and society. The book and the author were both subject to acts of violence. The book and Marryat's effigy were each burned in public." A listing of a modern printing of this book states the following: "Marryat 1792-1848 joined the British navy at the age of 14, lived at times in Canada and the United States, and returned home in 1839. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and was one of the early authors to develop the sea story. This book records his impressions of the America that he saw while living there."
