THE WAR, New York, May 11, 1813

* USS Constitution - William Bainbridge
* HMS Java - Henry Lambert

One-third of the front page is taken up with: "Capture of the Java" by the frigate Constitution. Also on the front page: "Late & Important Intelligence from England" and "Blockade of the American Coast".
Inside includes: "Capture of Little York--and Death of General Pike", which is present-day Toronto. "Glorious Victory" is a nice editorial concerning the capture of York. Elsewhere: "The Attack on Havre-de-Grace" "British Depredations" "North-Western Army" "Latest from Fort Meigs" "The Squadron" "Summary" and more.
Four pages, 9 by 11 1/4 inches, tiny binding holes at the blank spine, good condition.

background: On December 29, 1812, the American heavy frigate USS Constitution, commanded by Captain Isaac Hull, engaged the British frigate HMS Java, under Captain Henry Lambert, off the coast of Brazil near São Salvador. The battle was a classic single-ship duel, emblematic of the War of 1812’s frigate actions. The Constitution, nicknamed “Old Ironsides” because British cannonballs seemed to bounce off her thick oak hull, dominated the fight with superior firepower, maneuvering, and gunnery. After a fierce exchange of broadsides, the Java was heavily damaged, her masts crippled, and her crew suffered severe casualties. Captain Lambert was mortally wounded, and the British ship ultimately surrendered.

This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
