Great graphic presentation on the division of the nation during the Civil War...

Item # 701633

March 05, 1862

NEW YORK HERALD, March 5, 1862

* Fantastic American Civil War map
* Shows current Union & Confederate states

If there was a definitive newspaper from the Civil War that would be great for display, this very well might be it.
Most of the front page is taken up with a large & very detailed map headed: "THE PRESENT AREA OF THE REBELLION. The Loyal States and Territories of the Union in White, the Disloyal in Black." Perhaps no other issue graphically presents the division of the North & South than this.
The balance of the front page has war-related reports, plus war content is on several of the other pages as well.
Twelve pages, some printing creases to the front page, nice condition.

AI notes: The March 5, 1862 issue of the New York Herald featured a striking full-page map of the United States that gave readers a visual sense of the Civil War’s progress at a pivotal moment. Printed just after Union victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee and the capture of Nashville, the map highlighted the dividing line between Union and Confederate territory, major rivers and railroads, and the areas of recent fighting, offering Northern readers a clear picture of the shifting balance of the war. The Herald frequently used such large engravings to bring the conflict into homes far from the battlefield, and this edition’s map underscored growing optimism in the North as Federal forces pushed deeper into the South. Today, original copies of this issue with the intact map are prized as important relics of Civil War–era journalism and early wartime cartography.
