January 29, 1778
THE INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE & UNIVERSAL ADVERTISER, Boston, Jan. 29, 1778 A nice issue for display, as the masthead features an engraving taken from one done by Paul Revere for colonial currency at the time. It is a very patriotic device showing a soldier with a sword in one hand and a scroll with 'Independence' in the other, with the words 'Appeal To Heaven" above him.
The entire front page is taken up with: "Letter IV, From a Gentleman in the Country, to his Friend in this Town".
Page 2 has a report that asks several questions concerning the quotas of soldiers for the military. Page 3 has several reports concerning the Revolutionary War, one item mentioning a change for the captured General Lee. Also: "We are informed that the enemy's troops continue to desert daily from Philadelphia...to General Washington's camp."
Then: "The Treatment of Lieut. Thacker and Lieut. Hopkins, & Others, While in Captivity", followed by: "A letter from a general officer at the southward, dated Valley Forge, January 1, 1778".
The back page has a Resolve from Congress, noting in part: "That all masters, officers...subjects of the King of Great Britain, taken on board any prize may by any Continental vessel of war... considered as prisoners of war & treated as such..." with more detail.
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, damp staining at the left side, some dirtiness to the masthead, minimal wear, good condition.
