This was an off-shoot of the New York Illustrated News. Each month the Portrait Monthly featured woodcut engravings of the leading generals and politicians of the war, North and South, along with capsule biographies, news, stories, poetry, and serialized fiction, all pertaining to the war. The magazine only existed for 18 issues.
The front page has a portrait of "General Francis P. Blair, Jr." with his biography. Among the many portraits within are General Fitz Hugh Lee, Col. Benjamin Trafford, Col. Dwight Morris, William C. Bryant, Major-General Lovell H. Rosseau, General John Palmer, James T. Brady, and many more.
Sixteen pages, 9 1/4 by 11 1/2 inches, small binding holes at the blank spine margin, good condition.
