AI notes: In 1847, the first large group of Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young, entered the Salt Lake Valley, seeking refuge from severe religious persecution in the eastern United States. After being forced out of Missouri and Illinois—where violent mobs and legal pressures had threatened their lives—the Mormons embarked on a treacherous journey across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, enduring harsh weather, scarce food, and difficult terrain. In 1847, Young famously proclaimed, “This is the right place,” upon seeing the isolated, fertile valley that would become their new home. The settlers immediately began establishing farms, digging irrigation canals, and constructing homes, creating a self-sufficient community governed by their religious and social principles. Their arrival marked the beginning of a significant westward migration, transforming the remote region into a thriving settlement that laid the foundation for the future state of Utah.
