Describing Thomas Edison's etheric force... On Boss Tweed escaping from jail...

Item # 699943

December 09, 1875

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Dec. 9, 1875

* Thomas Alva Edison
* Etheric force experiments

Page 5 has nearly two columns taken up with: "MR. EDISON'S 'THE NEW FORCE' "A Letter From Dr. G. M. Beard" "Result of Physiological and Other Experiments--Characteristics of the Alleged Force--The Apparatus Used".
The back page has: "The Much-Sought Tweed" "An Active Search Maintained" and more subheads.
This concerns "Boss" Tweed, when he escaped jail on December 4 and fled to Spain, where he was eventually found and returned to the States and to jail.
Eight pages, very minor mend at a right margin, nice condition.

AI notes: On December 9, 1875, the New York Tribune published a letter by Dr. George Miller Beard discussing Thomas Edison's experiments with what Edison called "etheric force," a mysterious phenomenon he believed to be a new form of energy distinct from electricity or magnetism. Edison observed sparks in nearby metal objects without direct electrical connections, which he interpreted as evidence of this new force. While the idea briefly gained attention, later scientific investigations suggested the effects were due to known electromagnetic phenomena, leading Edison to abandon the research. In retrospect, these experiments were early, unrecognized observations of electromagnetic waves, laying the groundwork for future wireless communication.
