Item # 694462

October 24, 1820

WOODSTOCK OBSERVER, Vermont, Oct. 24, 1820

* Rare Windsor County publication

The only other issue of this title we have offered in the last 30+ years is from 1829. This is the volume 1, number 42 issue.
The back page has: "A Project of a Law for Preventing Unhappy Marriages". But this issue is from our private collection, selected for inclusion because of its great condition.
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, very nice condition.

AI notes: The Woodstock Observer was a weekly newspaper founded in Woodstock, Vermont, with its first issue published on January 11, 1820, by David Watson, a trained printer who had settled in the town two years earlier. Initially intended as a nonpartisan publication serving the local community, the paper changed ownership in 1823 when Rufus Colton took over, expanded its scope, and renamed it the Woodstock Observer and Windsor & Orange County Gazette. Under Colton, the paper became aligned with the National Republican Party, reflecting the growing political divisions of the era, but it struggled financially, with subscription and advertising revenue often insufficient to cover costs. Despite its relatively short run, ceasing publication around June 1832, the newspaper played an important role in documenting early 19th-century life in rural Vermont, providing insight into local politics, society, and commerce, and it remains a valuable resource for historians and genealogists studying Windsor County and the evolution of community journalism in the state.
