June 06, 1864

RICHMOND EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, June 6, 1864

* Battle of Cold Harbor
* General Robert E. Lee letters
* Rare Confederate title

 Not only a Confederate newspaper, but from the capital of the Confederacy as well.
The front page has much war-related news including items headed: "The War News--Operations of the Armies Before Richmond--The Enemy Make Repeated Assaults, But are Repulsed At All Points--All Goes Well with Our Army--A Naval Success" and this is followed by a letter to the Secretary of War signed in type: R. E. Lee, General, concerning a recent military action with the Yankees. And not further on is another letter signed: R. E. Lee, General concerning repulsing the Yankees at Cold Harbor.
Also on the front page is: "General Lee's Army" with much on his actions, plus various small heads including: "Attack by the Enemy Friday Night" "A Naval Success--Capture of a Yankee Mann-of-War" "From the Valley of Virginia" "Yankee Deserters" and other items.
There is more war news on the back page, plus the always interesting editorial which begins: "The military situation is full of hope & cheerfulness. The enemy has put his army in a position from which he can scarcely retreat without ruin & whence his advance seems, so far, to be impossible..." with more talk concerning events at Cold Harbor.
Also on the back page are: "Latest News From The North" with various subheads including: "The War News" "Story of a Richmond Refugee" "Nominations for the Next Presidency" and other items. There is also over two columns of reporting from: "The Confederate Congress" and a lengthy letter datelined from: "Cold Harbour, June 5, 1864" with some nice details.

Complete as a single sheet issue with a one column masthead, typical of Confederate issues late in the war due to paper scarcity. The front page has various soiling & staining which causes some difficulty in reading near the center of the issue. The back page has some foxing but not disfiguring.

Item from Catalog 346 (released for September, 2024)
