July 03, 1863

WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, July 3, 1863  This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
The ftpg. contains several war related reports including items headed: "Interesting Correspondence" being a letter from a soldier who deserted his regiment to visit his father, and -- admitting his error -- requests the governor for pardon & to rejoin his ranks. A fascinating & unusual letter, with the governor's response. Also on the ftpg: "Shipment of Cotton to the North" "Private Property Respected" "Deserters" and a few other war-related items.
The inside pages have much on the Civil War as well, with items headed: "The News" "The Habeas Corpus" "Blockade Running" "Northern Items" "Serious Yankee Raid" 'Have we Tories & Traitors Among us?" and other items.
Most of the back page is taken up with advertisements save for a poem titled: "The Boys who Stay At Home", and "A Proclamation by the Governor of North Carolina" concerning a requisition for more soldiers. One of the ads is headed: "Deserters, Arrest Them" (see).
.Complete in four pgs., light water stain in the upper right, one brown stain near the top of the ftpg., a small archival mend to the bkpg., otherwise nice.
