October 20, 1859

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., Oct. 20, 1859  Page 2 has a very detailed report on the raid upon Harper's Ferry by John Brown and his cohorts, headed: "Insurrection At Harper's Ferry".
The introduction includes in part: "The interesting narrative which we copy below...will afford the reader full information as to the originators of the late fanatical conspiracy...and of the manner in which their foolhardy enterprise was suppressed...shows the absurd process by which monomaniacs sometimes attempt to carry out their purposes...".
What follows is a very detailed account taking over half of the page with subheads including: "The Originators of the Conspiracy" which mentions John Brown; "The Commencement of the Insurrection" "The Beginning of the Fight" "Arrival of the Military" "Fort of the Insurgents" "The Attack & Capture" "The Prisoners" "Capt. Brown's Statement" and every more.
Continued content on page 3 as well.
This insurrection was an effort by abolitionist John Brown to initiate a slave revolt in Southern states by taking over the U.S. arsenal at Harper's Ferry. It has been called the dress rehearsal for, or Tragic Prelude to the Civil War.
Great to have this report in a newspaper so close to the event (65 miles away) and from the nation's capital.
Four pages, very nice condition. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.

Category: Pre-Civil War
