Item # 689555
November 06, 1779
THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE & COUNTRY JOURNAL, Rhode Island, Nov. 6, 1779
* American Revolutionary War
* Southern events - Georgia & more
Most of the first column is taken up with the details of a non-exportation act by the state of Rhode Island, similar to that enacted by Massachusetts & Connecticut. Included are the penalties for those found guilty. Also an act for: "...the Preservation of the Public Buildings in this State erected or improved for the Use of the Army...". More acts on page 2.
Page 2 has a letter from Charleston noting: "...we hear that almost every man in that place & all the troops that could be collected, had gone to Georgia to co-operate with count d'Estaing in the reduction of that state; that a number of French had landed & attacked the English post a Beaufort...".
Another report notes: "...on the appearance of Count d'Estaing's fleet at Beaufort...attacked the fort by assault, which lasted 3 hours, when it surrendered; they took Colonel Maitland, 7 or 800 privates...the Count then sailed for Savannah when the whole garrison surrendered at discretion."
Page 3 has a letter from Henry Laurens to General Washington concerning the siege at Savannah. Also a letter from West Point noting: "...since the enemy landed a party at Amboy...They marched to to Brunswick & Middle Brook where they burnt a few public boats...The whole of the enemy's party went towards Monmouth where it is said they embarked & returned to New York...".
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, a paper-making flaw to the back leaf causes a hole (not wear), bit of foxing, otherwise in very nice condition.
