Historic Proclamation by the King formally ending the Revolutionary War...
Item # 689194
February 15, 1783
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, February 15, 1783
* End of Revolutionary War
* King George III proclamation
* The cessation of hostilities
Certainly the prime--and very historic--content takes over one-third of the back page, headed: "By the KING, A PROCLAMATION Declaring the Cessation of Arms, as well by sea as land, Agreed Upon Between his Majesty's the most Christian King, the King of Spain, the States General of the United Provinces, and the United States of America...".
This is the very historic document by which Great Britain officially declares an end to the Revolutionary War.
Near the end of the Proclamation is the operative phrase: "...We have thought fit...to notify the same to all our loving subjects, and we do declare, that our royal will and pleasure is...strictly charge & command all our officers, both at sea and land...to forbear all acts of hostility, either by sea or land, against his Most Christian Majesty, the King of Spain, the States General of the United Provinces, and the United States of America...from and after the respective times above-mentioned, and under the penalty of incurring our highest displeasure."
The document is dated at the Court of St. James, the 14th day of February, 1783.
Although it pale in comparison, there is other good content concerning the work towards finding a peace to end hostilities. There is much from the "House of Commons" under the headings: "Ratification of Peace" and "Powers of the Commissioners of America and Great Britain for Making Peace" taking nearly 3 pages.
Terrific to have this notable document in a newspaper from London, the city where it was created. We very rarely have the opportunity to offer such a newspaper.
Eight pages, 8 1/4 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
