Great graphic issue on the Lincoln assassination...
Item # 688985
May 06, 1865
FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED, May 6, 1865
* Graphic issue on Abraham Lincoln's murder & funeral
This issue remains one of the most dramatic of the newspapers reporting Lincoln's assassination, particularly for the terrific front page featuring a print of John Wilkes Booth leaping from the President's box at Ford's Theatre just after shooting Lincoln, showing the President slumped over in his seat and his wife reacting in shock.
Inside is a nice doublepage centerfold showing Lincoln's coffin lying in state in the East Room of the White House surrounded by a large crowd. (archival repairs to the reverse of this print.
The back page has a print of the "Hat & spur worn by the murderer of President Lincoln & dropped by him in his flight from the theatre."
Present is the very rare four page foldout captioned: "Funeral of President Lincoln at Washington, D.C...The Cortege...Moving Past the President's Mansion" however it suffers various damage. There are many archival mends to the reverse of this print, two portions missing near the middle and much wear at folds and margins with some loss. See the photos.
Given this print's huge size (folds out to 44 inches) it typically is in poor condition, if present at all.
Sixteen pages, irregular at the spine margin, the four-page foldout is separate from the rest of the issue.
If nothing else, the great front page and the doublepage centerfold are nice for display, despite the damage to the four page foldout. Offered at about 30% of the value of an issue in nice condition.
