GRASS VALLEY DAILY TIDINGS & FREE LANCE, California, Sept. 19, 1881

* Rare old West publication
* Many interesting advertisements

Grass Valley, which was originally known as Boston Ravine and later named Centerville, dates from the California Gold Rush.
Gold was discovered at Gold Hill in October, 1850 and population grew around the mine. When a post office was established in 1851, it was renamed Grass Valley the next year for unknown reasons. The town incorporated in 1860.
Page 2 has: "President's Condition" which mentions in part: "...condition of the President continues unfavorable...Just before going to press the news comes...that Dr. Boynton says the President must die, and death is looked for any time." He would die on this very day.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.
