Item # 687604
January 03, 1800
THE SALEM GAZETTE, Massachusetts, January 3, 1800
* President George Washington
* Death - funeral w/ coffin print
A nice, displayable issue on the funeral of George Washington.
Over half of the front page is taken up with: "Internment Of General Washington" which begins: "On Wednesday last the mortal part of WASHINGTON THE GREAT--the Father of his Country, and the Friend of Man--was consigned to the tomb with solemn honours and funeral pomp..." with much more.
Featured near the middle of the front page is an engraving of his coffin, with the names of the various pallbearers alongside.
The text notes that: "...On the ornament, at the head of the coffin, was inscribed...General George Washington, departed this life on the 14th of Dec. 1799...".
The front page continues with: "Further Testimonials of Respect" which carry over to page 2 along with the response signed in type by the President: John Adams.
Virtually all of page 2 is taken up with Washington content, including the desired: "Particular Account of the Late Illness and Death of General Washington" which is signed by his attending and consulting physicians, J. Craik and E. C. Dick.
The full text of page 2 is shown in the photos.
Note that this issue has been professionally restored so that at places where portions were missing paper was filled in which causes some loss of text. The photos reflect the repairs.
Four pages, the entire issue has been professionally repaired and restored--very nicely done. A displayable issue.
