Item # 684462
March 21, 1862
DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, March 21, 1862
* Rare Confederate title from the rebel capital
* Monitor vs. Merrimac - New Bern, North Carolina
Nearly three columns on the front page are taken up with great editorial commentary on recent events in the war, beginning with reference to the Monitor & Merrimac with: "Though we have no news of battles, the military news of yesterday was important & interesting. The 'Virginia' [Merrimac] is still at Norfolk & the Yankees are said to be sinking hulks about Newport News to prevent her free movements..." followed by a wealth of other discussion concerning the war.
Also on the front page: "Movements & Spirit of the War--The Fight at New Bern--Additional Particulars--Our Forces to Make a Stand at Kinston" "The Battle of New Bern" "The Supreme Court of the Confederate States" "Further Dispatches From Tennessee" & a full column on reports from: "The Confederate Congress".
A tremendous amount of war content is found on page 2 including the typical anti-North editorial, which includes: "The enemy are displaying their usual lack of wisdom in their treatment of our citizens in the country they overrun...".
Also on pg. 2 are: "The Latest Northern News--Movements & Spirit of the War with smaller subheads: "The Great Fight in Arkansas--The Yankee Account of the Battle--The Federal Official Report--Additional--Comments of the Press--The Falling Back of Our Army on the Potomac--What the Yankees Think & Say of it--Their Shouts of Exultation...".
"Yankee Expectation and Hope" "The Naval Fight In Hampton Roads--More of the Affair in the North" the latter reporting the ravages wrecked by the Merrimac.
Page 3 has a printing error which causes a white streak, but no loss of text. A bit close-trimmed at the bottom of page 3.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, in very nice condition save for what is noted on page 3.
