Very dramatic issue on the first casualty of the Civil War...

The front page is mostly taken up with a dramatic print showing the murder of Col. Elmer Ellsworth at the Marshall House Hotel in Alexandria. Ellsworth, a personal friend of Lincoln (worked in his law office in Springfield), is considered the first casualty of the Civil War. Lincoln did not like seeing from the White House a Confederate flag flying across the river, so Ellsworth volunteered to remove it, being shot by the owner of the hotel while leaving. He became a martyr for the Union cause & Lincoln had his body lying in state at the White House.
The tipped-in doublepage centerfold is a great montage of 9 scenes of the: "Assassination of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth..." & the back page has a memorial print to him.
There is another tipped-in doublepage centerfold showing "Secession Battery at Harper's Ferry...".
Sixteen pages, dirtiness and foxing near the margins, generally good condition.
