THE DAILY INDEPENDENT, Virginia City, Nevada, Nov. 20, 1874 A very famous Western town which sprang up as a boom town with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major silver deposit discovery in the United States. The city's population peaked in the mid-1870's with about 25,000 residents. The current census shows about 850 residents. Virginia City was also once home to Mark Twain who worked at the "Enterprise" newspaper for a brief period.
Much local news including many items of a mining nature. A great wealth of ads as well, many illustrated.
