TUCUMCARI SUN, New Mexico. Jan. 19, 1912
* New Mexico Statehood
* Joins the Union
A quite uncommon title from this small New Mexico town in Eastern New Mexico, and great to have not only from the year New Mexico became a state, but this issue makes the formal announcement of statehood.
The front page has 2 column heads: "NEW MEXICO IS NOW A FULL-FLEDGED STATE" "Governor William C. McDonald and Other Elective Officials Inducted Into Office at High Noon Today, Hurrah For the Forty-seventh Star in the Flag" with much reporting on the celebrations.
Tucumcari, located on the old Route 66, has an interesting history and has been mentioned often in popular culture (Rain Man, NCIS, Designing Women, Adam-12, For a Few Dollars More, Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, etc.). The town was also the on-site location for many scenes of the show 'Rawhide' starring Clint Eastwood.
Eight pages, the 2nd leaf has a 3 by 7 inch piece clipped from it, otherwise in nice condition.
