Item # 682379
July 05, 1923
GREAT FALLS TRIBUNE, Montana, July 5, 1923
* Jack Dempsey vs. Tommy Gibbons
* Heavyweight boxing title (1st report)
* Shelby, Montana financial flop
The banner headlines announces: "DEMPSEY WINS VERDICT AFTER FURIOUS MILL" "Huge Gaps in Shelby Stands Mark Missing Fans at Glove Feast" and a subhead: "Gibbons Upsets Sport Universe By Going Route" and more.
The front page also features a photo on the heavyweight title match headed: "Challenger Blocks a Dempsey Right".
As much interest is the location of the title match, Shelby Montana, a town with no paved streets and a population of 500 which built a 40,000 seat stadium for the match. Shelby is about 85 miles from Great Falls.
Presumed complete in 12 pages, never bound, minor margin wear, generally very nice.
