history notes: The Battle of Cynthiana in Kentucky was fought in June 1864 during the Civil War, when Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan launched one of his last raids into his home state. On June 11, Morgan’s men surprised Union forces stationed in the town, quickly overwhelming a small garrison and setting fire to much of Cynthiana in the process. The following day, however, Morgan’s raiders were confronted by a much larger Union force under General Stephen G. Burbridge. Outnumbered and cut off, Morgan’s command suffered heavy losses, with hundreds killed, wounded, or captured, and his once-formidable cavalry was badly shattered. The defeat at Cynthiana effectively marked the end of Morgan’s ability to conduct large-scale raids, reducing his force to a shadow of its former strength and diminishing Confederate hopes of regaining momentum in Kentucky.
