Map on the capture of Jackson, Mississippi... Baseball during the Civil War...

Item # 681767

July 23, 1863

NEW YORK HERALD, July 23, 1863

* Jackson, Mississippi captured
* Nice front page civil war map
* Early baseball reporting

The front page is dominated by a detailed Civil War map headed: "THE CAPTURE OF THE CAPITAL OF MISSISSIPPI. The Defeat of the Rebel General Joe Johnston & His Evacuation of the City."
The front page column heads include: "Capture Of Jackson, Miss." "Another Brilliant Victory by Grant's Army" "Gen. Sherman & His Gallant Forces in Possession of Jackson" & more.
Also on the front page under: "Base Ball" is a report: "Eckford, Of Brooklyn, Vs. Mutual Of New York--The Champions Maintain Their Own." The account mentions there were at least 5,000 spectators, including a "large array" of females. Very uncommon to have a baseball report from during the Civil War, particularly on the front page.
Eight pages, very nice condition.
