The infamous Rock Island Railroad robbery, by the James Gang...

Item # 681153

August 18, 1881

THE PHILADELPHIA PRESS, July 18, 1881

* Outlaw Jesse James-Younger gang
* Rock Island railroad train robbery

The back page has 1 1/2 columns taken up with the infamous Rock Island Railroad train robbery, committed by Jesse James and his cohorts.
This is one of the more detailed accounts we have found. The column is headed: "THE TRAIN ROBBERY" "Narrative of the Daring Outrage, As Told by Passengers" "The Killing of Conductor Westfall and the Passenger McMilan--Desperate Encounter in the Express Car--Bravery of a Brakesman".
Among the subheads within the body of the report are: "How the Robbery Was Committed" "Conductor Westfall's Death" "The Express Messenger's Desperate Fight". A separate article with its own head: "The James Boys Implicated" begins: "There is considerable evidence to show that the train robbery on the Rock Island Road last Friday evening was done by the notorious James gang..." with a bit more.
Complete in 8 pages, quite fragile with various chipping at the margins but no loss to the mentioned articles. Archivally strengthened at the spine. Must be handled carefully.
