Read the poem to Abraham Lincoln...

Item # 681082

July 21, 1864

CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, July 21, 1864

* From the origin of the American Civil War

This was one of just a few newspapers which printed "Confederate States of America" in its dateline.
The front page begins with: "From Richmond - Enemy Again Defeated in the Valley--Latest Yankee News" and then: "Complimentary Letter to the 46th Georgia from Gen. Gist" dated June 30, 1864, very likely for their victorious efforts at the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain 3 days earlier.
The back page has a document from Major General Sam. Jones beginning: "Twenty-five hundred able-bodied Negroes are immediately needed to work on the fortifications around Charleston..." with further detail. There is also an interesting poem to Abraham Lincoln beginning: "Abhorred by every honest heart, thou monster knave and fool, Betrayer of thy country's hopes, and source of its bloody rule..." with much more.
Complete as a single sheet issue, 2 small archival mends to the bkpg., good condition.
