April 01, 1867

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, April 1, 1867  A terrific issue on the purchase of Alaska, as the front page has nearly a full column with heads: "The Russian Treaty - Russian America Ceded To The United States" and: "Washington Territory and the Russian Possessions" and: "The Ceded Territory" with much detail.
Equally as interesting is the page 4 editorial headed: "The Russian Slice".
It takes nearly a full column to comment on the purchase, most of the text of a negative slant. It begins: "The Administration has the credit or having made various attempts to cover up its failures at home by a stroke of foreign policy..." And further on: "...The getting of all this land offers us no advantage that can counterbalance the objects to the treaty...". Included in the editorial are the four major objections to the purchase, one noting in part: "...We have literally no use for this territory, if we acquire it..." and much more.
Eight pages, a small bit of damp staining to the upper right margin, very nice condition.
