PROVIDENCE GAZETTE, Rhode Island, Nov. 16, 1820 Page 2 has a report: "The Arkansaw Territory" which is an extract from a letter written to a friend in New Hampshire which begins: "I would have answered you sooner, but I have been sick almost ever since I received your letter; and this is the first day I have felt able to write; I am now very weak. This country must be called sickly. Every new comer, without exception, has been sick. The sickness here is fever and ague; a slow bilious fever, etc... " The letter continues, providing a great description of the territory.
