CRESTED BUTTE REPUBLICAN, Colorado, April 12, 1882 A rare newspaper which lasted for less than two years. The only institutional holding of this title noted in Gregory (Union List of American Newspapers) was the Kansas Historical Society but that collection was purchased in its entirety by us.
In the 1860s and 1870s coal and silver mines began to open in the Crested Butte area and many little mining towns formed. However, when silver mining hit on hard times, many of these towns failed. Crested Butte was in a better position to survive because it served as a supply town to the surrounding area. The other industry that supported Crested Butte was ranching. Today the population of Crested Butte is less than 1500.
Page 2 has a brief yet interesting item on the recent death of Jesse James: "The shooting of Jesse James, at St. Joe, Missouri, i his own house and by his guest, a man supported in the purpose by the governor, may be all right but it is hardly according to the Colorado code."
Various other news tidbits of the day, most with a mining theme, and a wealth of advertisements as well. Four pages printed on very nice, high-quality newsprint, nice condition.
