Item # 679146
August 10, 2011
LOS ANGELES TIMES, Aug. 10, 2011
* Premiere of "The Color Purple", starring Whoopi Goldberg
* Premiere of "Out of Africa", starring Meryl Streep & Robert Redford
* Contrasting reviews with full-page ads for each
A terrific issue on the premieres of both motion picture hits: "The Color Purple" and "Out of Africa". Perhaps no better issue could be found than this, it being the leading newspaper from the home of the entertainment industry - the Hollywood area's prime publication.
The front page of the Calendar (Part VI) has a review of both films, each under the same heading: "TWO WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE IN UNLIKELY SETTINGS", and both include related photos. The coverage continues on pages 2 and 4. As an added bonus, each have full-page, displayable advertisements.
The newspaper is believed to be complete in multiple sections, but is being offered for the described content. In very good condition, but the issue does have even toning, and the front section has mid-fold browning. See images for details.
Note: Where else might one find authentic, large ads for Opening Day showings, in the most desirable Hollywood-area newspaper - as we were lucky enough to obtain this (and others) indirectly from the Los Angeles Times' own collection? It simply doesn't get any better! In over 40 years of collecting, we have yet to see such unique & dramatic coverage with truly top-shelf, eye-catching displayability (see images).
Background - I (Wikipedia): The Color Purple is a 1985 American coming-of-age period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It was Spielberg's eighth film as a director, and marked a turning point in his career as it was a departure from the summer blockbusters for which he had become known. It was also the first feature film directed by Spielberg for which John Williams did not compose the music, instead featuring a score by Quincy Jones, who also produced. The cast stars Whoopi Goldberg in her breakthrough role, with Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery, Rae Dawn Chong, Willard Pugh, and Adolph Caesar.
Background - II (Wikipedia): Out of Africa is a 1985 American epic romantic drama film directed and produced by Sydney Pollack, and starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. The film is based loosely on the 1937 autobiographical book Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen (the pseudonym of Danish author Karen Blixen), with additional material from Dinesen's 1960 book Shadows on the Grass and other sources.
