THE EASTERN ARGUS, Portland, Maine, Aug. 17, 1858

* Transatlantic telegraph cable
* 1st transmission - Atlantic Ocean

Page 2 has half a column with a report on the first telegraphic transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, headed: "Atlantic Telegraph!" "Queen Victoria's Message", her message to Buchanan reading: "Her Majesty desires to congratulate the President upon the successful completion of the great international work, in which the Queen has taken the deepest interest."
This is followed by: "The President's Reply" from Washington, to Queen Victoria, signed in type: James Buchanan.
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, a few discrete archival mends at the central fold, very nice condition.
