THE NEW YORK HERALD, September 23, 1864 Page five of this issue has the heading; "LETTER FROM GENERAL FREMONT", which is actually 2 letters from General Fremont announcing both his resignation from the presidential campaign and the reasons which led him to his decision. There is also a resignation letter from General Cochrane, his Vice Presidential running mate.

Commentary: Had Fremont not withdrawn, Lincoln would likely not have been elected, he likely would not have been assassinated, and this issue would likely not be nearly as significant.
