November 21, 1837

NEW YORK AMERICAN, Nov. 24, 1837  The front page contains nearly an entire column concerning the murder of Elijah Lovejoy. It begins with a brief report headed: "The Alton Murders" with some text introducing a very lengthy letter from the Major of Alton which has much detail on the attack and murder.
Famed abolitionist & newspaper publisher Elijah Lovejoy was killed by a pro-slavery faction in Alton angry over Lovejoy's anti-slavery editorial stance. Lovejoy is considered an early martyr to the anti-slavery movement.
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, and a bit close-trimmed at the bottom of the spine affecting ads only, otherwise good condition.
