May 03, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, May 3, 1865   Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated.
The front page has over two columns taken up with: "FUNERAL HONORS OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN IN Boston" "The Whole City Shrouded in Mourning" "Services In The Churches" "A Monster Meeting on the Common". The text is lightly inked in spots causing some difficulty in reading (see photos), but all is readable.
The ftpg also has: "Beecher On The Event" "Discourse Upon the Murder of President Lincoln by the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, at Plymouth Church" as well was; "The Great Criminals--In What Court Should They Be Tried?"
Complete as a single sheet, folio size newspaper, a 3 inch stain causing no loss of readability, nice condition.
