Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter weeks of the Civil War.
The front page has: "Northern News" "Confederate Congress" "Gen. Hoke's Division" as well has a report from the: "Headqr's Army of Northern Virginia" signed in type: R. E. Lee, General. In the document he appeals to the need for more firearms. Also a "General Order" signed: R. E. Lee, General, in which he pleads for the return of deserted soldiers, offering them amnesty if they do.
The back page includes: "Sherman" "Charleston--Incidents of the Evacuation" "Later & Important From the North--Great Rejoicing Over Sherman's Successes!--Strength Of Sherman's Army!" which takes nearly 2 columns.
Complete as a single sheet, folio size newspaper in very nice, clean condition.
