Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter weeks of the Civil War.
The front page has two Acts the North Carolina legislature concerning the Home Guard. Also: "From Richmond" "From Charleston" and: "Later from the North". The back page has: "The Situation" which is an interesting editorial on the failings of the Confederacy, including: "Things are so confused...but little to say about the military situation. Sherman is in South Carolina, seemingly having things his own way...He is reported as moving on both Augusta and Columbia...We know nothing of the strength of our own force in South Carolina...the time of speculation has ceased--the crisis is upon us...". Also: "Statuette of General Lee" plus over a full column on: "War News" with subheads: "Grant's Recent Movement--From South Carolina--North Georgia--Gen. Lee Going to South Carolina--The Late Affair Near Petersburg" and more.
Complete as a single sheet, folio size newspaper in very nice, clean condition.
