THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, October 19, 1861 Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city, it surrendering without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
The front page includes: "What The Morning Journals Say" which has various war-related items; "The Mystery of the Fight at the Passes" "The Trial by Battle" "The Fremont Imroblio" which includes: "Mrs. Fremont's Second Letter to the President" followed by: "The President's Reply" which is signed in type: A. Lincoln (see); "The Latest News From The North" "A Negro Preaching Secession Doctrine" and a few other items.
Page 2 has some nice column heads including: "Army of the Potomac Fallen Back" "Fairfax in Possession of Our Pickets" "New Mail Schedule Between Richmond & Montgomery" "Death of Lieut. Arnold, of Georgia" 'Flag Presentation to Howell Cobb's Regiment" and also: "The Miracle" "Military Apathy in the North" and another items begins: "...who in his wildest imaginings of the audacity & despotism of the Lincoln emissaries would ever conceive of such a stretch of tyranny as is exposed in the following item...". Page 3 is mostly ads but does have over a column of: "Intelligence from Late Northern Papers". The bkpg. is taken up with ads & does have "Acts of Election" & "Notice of Election" and a lengthy document: "Confederate Congress" (see).
Four pages, very nice condition.
