July 19, 1862
LOS ANGELES STAR, California, July 19, 1862 One of the earliest Los Angeles newspapers we have offered, and from the Civil War no less. At this time the population of Los Angeles was less than 5,000.
The feature of this issue is a small & inconspicuous article reading in part: "A girl named Mary Fitzallan was arrested a short time since in Chicago, clothed in a volunteer's uniform and posing under the name of Harry Fitzallan. She is a native of Kentucky and has served in the Twenty-third regiment of Union volunteers from that state..." with a bit more.
The internet recognizes here, but curiously her name was Marian McKenzie. But it's the same person as the website notes she was from Kentucky and served in the 23rd Kentucky inventory regiment as Pt. Harry Fitzallen.
Such incidences of women portraying men to fight in the war were quite uncommon, and even less commonly reported in newspapers of the day.
Four pages, an archival mend across page 2, generally nice condition.
