September 23, 1797

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Sept. 23, 1797

* USS Constitution launch attempt
* United States Navy frigate

A page 2 report from Boston headed "The Constitution" states in part: "We this day were in hopes to have announced to the public the launch of the frigate Constitution:--But after two attempts to set her afloat, she remains in perfectly safety, on the ways where she was constructed...".
A second report headed "The Launch Of The Frigate Constitution" has additional details explaining the circumstances and mentioning that: "The Constructor could have forced her off, had his pride or ambition exceeded his discretion and patriotism; but he chose to sacrifice his feelings, rather than risk the lives of his fellow citizens, or the property of the public; and many thanks are due to him and Capt. Nicholson, for their decision..."
There is also a related report: "The Launch, or Hints on Mechanic Powers" which carries over to page 3.
The back page has a poem: "Frigate Constitution".
In actuality the famed ship would eventually be launched on October 21, almost a month later.
Four pages, minor foxing, good condition.
