May 12, 1836

NATIONAL GAZETTE AND LITERARY REGISTER, Philadelphia, May 12, 1836  On page 3 under "Mexican Officials" are letters concerning the Texas War of Independence.
Among the letters is a terrific account from Santa Anna about the Battle of the Alamo. The account, datelined "March 6, 1836", is addressed to the Mexican Secretary of War and Navy, begins: "Victory accompanies the Army, at this moment...we have had a most complete and glorious one....As announced to you the 27th of the past month...I waited the arrival of the first brigade of infantry, in order to operate effectually upon the fortress of the Alamo...".
A few more details about the increase of Mexican troops as the account continues, stating: "...the assault was given at five in the morning, and met with the most obstinate resistance, so that during the struggle of an hour and a half, it was necessary...to bring up the reserve. The spectacle which this conflict exhibited, was extraordinary. Men were seen in every direction contending hand to hand....the rapid fire of musketry ... appeared to illuminate the interior of the fort; and the ditches and walls, were insufficient obstacles to the undaunted Mexicans....the fortress at length remained in our power....We buried in the ditches and trenches more than six hundred bodies, all foreigners ....Among the dead were found the first and second in command of the insurgents, Bowie and Travis, colonels as they entitle themselves; Crockett, another of the same stamp, and the rest of their leaders..." and more, signed in type: Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna.
There is a second letter from Santa Anna that states, in part: "...Inhabitants of Bejar! Return to your homes and attend to your domestic affairs...".
There are also letters from Jose Urrea about the events at Goliad. Uncommon to have a such an account from Santa Anna about the Battle of the Alamo, especially with the mentions of Bowie, Travis & Crockett.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed (desirable), very nice, clean condition.
