The front page has a legal notice soliciting bids to build a new United States Mint in San Francisco, headed: "Proposals For Erecting a Mint, With the Necessary Machinery, at San Francisco, California". It is signed in type by the Secretary of the Treasury, Thos. Corwin.
The notice takes half a column and has considerable detail on how the mint is to be constructed.
In July of 1852 Congress approved the creation of a new U.S. Mint in California. San Francisco was selected as the location. This newspaper reports the solicitation of bids for its construction, and the Mint opened for operation in 1854.
