The Emancipation Proclamation on the front page...

Item # 674338

September 23, 1862

NEW YORK HERALD, Sept. 23, 1862  A terrific issue with this historic content, as the entire text of the famous Emancipation Proclamation, wherein President Abraham Lincoln freed all slaves in both the North & the South, is contained in the first two columns of the front page. More typically this text is found on inside pages of most newspapers.
The heading at the top of the first column boldly reads: "A PROCLAMATION by the President Of The United States" "Operations of the Confiscation Act" "All Slaves in Rebellion January 1, 1863, to Be Free" "The President Renews the Offer to Pay for Slaves of Loyalists". This document is signed in type near the top of the second column: Abraham Lincoln.
The balance of the front page is mostly taken up with Civil War reports and includes two one column maps as well.
Another of this issue sold in auction recently for $3,000.
Eight pages and in simply wonderful condition.
