THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, June 23, 1791

* Daniel Mendoza vs. William Ward
* Jewish boxer - boxing  challenge

Inside has two-thirds of a column taken up with a nice account of a boxing match headed: "Boxing - Ward and Mendoza". Daniel Mendoza was a famous Jewish boxer who transformed the English stereotype of a Jew from a weak, defenseless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King, George III. He was the British boxing champion from 1792-1795.
The report includes: "Yesterday being the day appointed for deciding the bets on the match between Ward and Mendoza...that the battle would be fought there...then proposed that they should fight at the Cricket Ground...two battles were fought on the turf...The Russian hit the countryman who appeared to be too much in flesh for fighting, every blow right in the face..." with much more on the fight (see).
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches, very nice condition.
