February 20, 1871
NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Feb. 20, 1871 The back page contains a fascinating article under the heading: "Religious", titled: "A Jewish View of Jesus", with a preface which includes: "Rabbi Isaac M. Wise delivered the first lecture of the course on the Talmud and the Gospels...in Steinway Hall...His subject was 'Jesus and the Pharisees'..." with a bit more.
The text of the presentation offers some cynical & defensive comments concerning Jesus and his role on earth, and near the beginning of the presentation is: "...He was Pharisean doctor, and eminent patriot, a fervent enthusiast, determined to rescue his country from the clutches of a bloody despotism. He was crucified by the Roman authorities to the chastisement, chagrin, and profound regret of the Jews. I maintain these paradoxes in contradiction to those modern critics who advance the idea that Jesus was an Essene; to those who hold the theory that no such person ever lived, and especially against the unfounded theories of Renan..." with the balance of the text detailing these thoughts.
Complete in 8 pages, nice condition.
