This is one of the more graphic issues of the Times from the entire Civil War, obviously celebrating the triumphant report of General U.S. Grant capturing the capital of the Confederacy. With this event the end of the Civil War was but days away.
The dominating feature of the front page is the great engraving of an eagle with a banner reading "Richmond ! " in its talons. And the first column headlines have some of the largest type used by the Times, with: "GRANT" "RICHMOND and VICTORY ! " "The Union Army In the Rebel Capital" "Rout & Flight of the Great Rebel Army from Richmond" "Jeff. Davis and His Crew Driven Out" "Grant in Close Pursuit of Lee's Routed Forces" "Richmond and Petersburgh in Full Possession of Our Forces" "Richmond Fired by the Enemy" "Our Troops Save the City from Destruction" and more.
The first column also includes a dispatch signed in type by the President: A. Lincoln, noting: "This morning Lieut. Gen. Grant reports Petersburgh evacuated and he is confident that Richmond also is. He is pushing forward to cut off, if possible, the retreating rebel army."
Also, the last column has related news concerning the final moments of the Civil War as well, with heads: "THE GLORIOUS NEWS" "Rejoicing in City and Country" "Enthusiasm, Solemnity and Thanksgiving" "The Whole City Aglow with Excitement" and more.
Complete in 8 pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet (as sold on the street), some minor creases, most near the margins, quite nice condition.
