IAPI OAYE, THE WORD CARRIER, published by the Dakota Mission in Dakota Indian territory (later South Dakota), March, 1879

* Very rare publication

This very uncommon newspaper was founded in 1871 with the first three pages in the Dakota Indian language, and the last page in English. In 1884 the editor decided to divide & separately publish the Dakota and English language material, titled separately "Iapi Oaye" and "Word Carrier". This issue precedes that event and carries both names in the masthead.
The entire ftpg. is a print of "My Father's At The Helm - Ate Iyupse Yuze Do." Pages 2 & 3 are in the Dakota Indian language with page 4 in English. Page 4 also has the address of the publisher, the Rev. A. L. Riggs, at the Santee Agency, Nebraska.
Four pages, 11 by 15 1/2 inches, minimal wear, good condition.
