AMERICAN PHRENOLOGICAL JOURNAL, New York, August, 1854

* Kit Carson - frontiersman

Phrenology is a theory stating that the personality traits of a person can be derived from the shape of the skull. Although holding no validity today, it was a popular science in the mid-19th century and this periodical focused on it.
Inside has a great article, including a rare print, of: "Kit Carson - A Phrenological Character and Portrait" with near the beginning: "Mr. Carson possesses a strongly marked organization...He is a man of strong muscles, large bones, and positive character. Phrenologically...he presents a well-developed brain with some very sharply defined developments..." and so much more.
Complete in 24 pages, 9 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
