This was the day Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address. It can be interesting to read what others were reading when something exceedingly historic was in the process of happening.
And this issue has a neat item relating to Gettysburg, with a back page heading: "Gettysburg Cemetery Dedication - Departure of the President and Party for Gettysburg".
The report notes the various dignitaries attending, and also notes that: "The special excursion train of the governors left at half past......Gettysburg [printing error here]. Among the principal dignitaries were Governors Curtin, Seymour, Pierpont..." with more. Then: "...The train will connect with the President's company at Hanover Junction, where the President will be received with becoming honors, and the whole party will then proceed to Gettysburg. The attendance at the ceremonies will be very large. Numbers left here this morning in wagons and the trains are crowded."
This is followed by the: "Order of the Procession".
Intriguing to note this inconspicuous report, relegated to the back page, could very easily have been left out of the newspaper, yet figures into one of the most notable events of the entire Civil War.
