November 18, 1857

NEW YORK HERALD, Nov. 18, 1857  Page 6 contains one of the more historic documents in Mormon history, with the report headed: "The Mormon War" which has a report from military officers on the situation: "...confirming the destruction of the supply trains...". This is followed by a letter from the: "Governor's Office Utah Territory" written to: "The Officer Command the Forces now Invading Utah Territory:..." which includes in part: "...I have issued and forwarded to you a copy of my proclamation forbidding the entrance of armed forces into the Territory. This you have disregarded. I now further direct that you retire forthwith from the Territory by the same route you entered..." with much more, signed in type: Brigham Young.
This is followed by his historic proclamation of martial law throughout Utah. This document is headed: "Proclamation By The Governor" and begins: "Citizens of Utah: We are invaded by a hostile force who are evidently assailing us to accomplish our overthrow and destruction..." with much more. It is signed in type: Brigham Young. Then there are even more reports concerning the Mormons.
Additionally, fully one-third of the front page is taken up with terrific report on the Mormon situation, with a column headed: "THE UTAH EXPEDITION" "Additional Particulars of the Mormon Attack on the Government Trains" "Sketch of Brigham Young" "The Prophet Of Utah" with various subhead. Further on is: "Mormon Hostilities On The Plains".
A terrific issue on Mormon history, on several accounts.
Eight pages, very nice, clean condition.
